I have incoming news and I don’t really want to speak about it openly yet.
But it has me going through my archives, both physical and digital. There is so much there which has never been uploaded to the web, and I have no intention of uploading things that aren’t for sale.
However, some of my digital archive involves the fact that I have been commissioned by the Harris Museum in the past, and I made two films for them:
The first was made in 2019 and was made during a very busy half term where, due to health issues, it was completed at the very last minute. This was sgraffito pottery and this sort of pottery was why I started drawing every day back in 2016. It was because I dreamed of being able to draw better images on pots, but knew with starting a new job that year I wouldn’t be able to make pottery as often.
The second film was made in the summer of 2020; this was the commission that got me to think about quitting my day job a week or two after I made it. The commission gave me space to not go back to work for a time, and it didn’t even pay that much, but it gave me some confidence. Combined with the money from the previous film it gave me some breathing space.
When I look at the cover image of this film, they are from the International Ceramics Festival in 2015, where I ended up being involved in updating the festival’s social media for the best part of a week. I also live-streamed parts of the festival, and I like to believe I made a difference.
This experimental work speaks to my soul in ways a lot of my other ceramics don’t.
Much like my early mark-making on pottery that eventually led to a range of woodblock prints, which I absolutely love. This isn’t saying I don’t love everything else but these pieces are more primal in their creation. They are physical; there is movement, rhythm, pattern, in the ways that say my drawing or painting place don’t. They also use gross motor rather than the fine motor skills needed to paint.

I have ideas for days for more of this but I have a focus on something else which, like I said at the start, I can’t talk about yet.
